Dr. Enrique Ona: A Pioneering Figure in Philippine Healthcare

As the Secretary of the Department of Health from 2010 to 2014, Dr. Enrique Ona played a crucial role in shaping the country's healthcare system. With his extensive experience as a surgeon and public servant, he brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his position.

In his tenure, Dr. Ona oversaw the release of funds for various health programs, including the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health and Nutrition (MNCHN) program. However, the allocation of P2.4 million in 2010 was put on hold due to the provincial government's failure to submit its report on the province's investment plan for health.

Dr. Ona explained that the Ilocos Norte Provincial Health Office received an allocation of over P644,000 and almost P600,000 for their health programs. He emphasized the importance of compliance with DOH and Commission on Audit (COA) requirements, including the submission of reports on fund utilization and liquidation.

In a press conference, Dr. Ona belied Senator Tito Sotto's claims that some local government units did not receive funds allocated to them from 2008 to 2010. He attributed the non-release of funds to potential failures in liquidating funds from previous year's family health programs.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ona has received numerous awards and recognition for his contributions to healthcare. These include the Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) award for Medicine in 1979 and the Presidential Award of Recognition in Organ Transplantation in 2000. He also holds a medical license in the state of Massachusetts, United States.

Before taking on the role as Health Secretary, Dr. Ona served as the executive director of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) for 11 years and was the president of the Transplantation Society of the Philippines since 1989.
